The Republic’s first large-scale desalination plant can treat both seawater and freshwater and it will begin operations in 2020.
The type of water that will be drawn into the desalination plant will depend on weather conditions, in fact during wetter seasons, freshwater form the reservoir will be drawn, while the plant will tap seawater during dry spells. The water drawn will then travel underground, northwards, through a dual-flow chamber for around 1,8 km, before reaching the plant, where it will be treated.
The water-treatment plant will also be located underground and capped with a rooftop lawn, which will be open to the public.
