While China encompasses almost 20% of the world’s population, the country contains only 7% of the world’s fresh water, leaving it with much less annual fresh water available per capita than most other countries. In addition to growing population, pollution further limits the amount of water available for use. According to the 4th International Seawater Desalination and Water Reutilization Meeting, that was held in Hangzhou, capital of eastern China’s Zhejiang Province, desalinated seawater has become an important source of water in the country. China has built 112 water desalination facilities with a combined daily treatment capacity of 1.08 million cubic meters. About half of current desalination facilities are used for providing water for public use, such as for water used in urban landscaping.
