Masdar, Abu Dhabi, has launched a new company to tackle landfill waste by turning it into energy.
The project, promoted by Emirates Waste to Energy Company, is to build a facility that will process up to 300,000 tonnes of solid waste per year, and has the capacity to produce 30 megawatts (MW) of energy.
The companies involved in the project, signed the power purchase agreement and are currently working to reach a financial close before starting construction.
To Masdar typically landfill waste is burnt which is a major pollutant to the environment and the most important objective is to divert 75 per cent of its solid waste from landfill sites by 2021.
The global waste-to-energy sector is forecast to grow by 65 per cent to more than US$33 billion by 2023.
